Cleverly Embedded Smart Ideas in Popular Logo Designs

Recently on our sister blog, we discussed the hidden arrow in the FedEx logo. The conclusion was that there is an idea behind this hidden arrow. It provides a momentarily joy of discovering something to the viewer. Secondly, it smartly embeds FedEx’s message into the logo design. This trend is not just limited to FedEx logo. In this post we will look at some other examples where an idea is cleverly embedded into logo.

Sun Microsystems Logo

This is the logo design of Sun Microsystems. In this logo you see a diamond type shape on your left. This is not a diamond, it is an ambigram designed by professor Vaughan Pratt of Stanford University. An ambigram is a typographical design that spells out one or more words from different perspectives and point of views. In this example this ambigram spells out word sun from all corners.

This is the logo of world’s most popular online shopping destination amazon.com, and you can notice an arrow below the word amazon. Surprisingly many of Amazon customers don’t know what this arrow means. To most of them it looks like a smile. Well it is not a smile; if you notice, the arrow begins from “A” and ends at “Z” making a clever a-to-z sign. This iconography suggests that Amazon promises to provide you all the items that could possibly be sold online.

North West Airlines Logo

This is the logo design of North West Airlines which is now merged with Delta Airlines. The typography in this logo cleverly uses the Word “W” to also make it look like “N”. When the viewer is concentrating on “N” they notice the triangle on their left which actually represents the aerodynamic shape of modern jetliners. You can see a similar combination of triangles representing aerodynamic shapes of modern planes in the logo Delta Airline

Nike Logo Mythology

This is Nike’s world famous swoosh logo. We have written a detailed post about the history and mythology behind Nike’s Logo. To summarize it here, Nike is the title of an ancient Greek Goddess. She was the goddess of victory and fame, and bestowed wellness and fortune on those who were great athletes or warriors. Now if one looks at how Nike promotes itself as a brand, one would notice that they do the same to the athletes, they endorse them by signing them up for huge amount of money and ask them to wear their swoosh sign in athletic competitions.

The Good Friday – Time to Pray and Improvise Your Logo Design

The origin of the term GOOD FRIDAY is not clear, some say it comes from Gottes Freitag (God’s Friday), and some say it is Good Friday, a good and happy day so we celebrate.

Good Friday, also known as in different Christian groups with different names like Holy Friday, Black Friday, Great Friday. Christians believe the Crucifixion of Jesus was most probably on a Friday, according to Isaac Newton it was AD 34.

But the questions found as a conflict between different Christian groups are, should we celebrate Good Friday? Or we commemorated as a day of mourning as Jesus was probably died on Friday?

According to a belief that ‘Good’ is referred to a ‘Gift’ brought by Martyrdom because it was Jesus who went to heaven, that is why it is also celebrated as a festival of life and spirit.

Many Christians spend this day in fasting, prayer, repentance, and meditation on the agony and sufferings of the Christ on the cross.

Whether it’s time to celebrate or mourn, for businesses Black Friday, or the Good Friday is a day to improvise their marketing and brand image. On these occasions businesses get an opportunity to associate themselves with the religious affiliations of their customers and clients. This results into strong customer loyalty and a sense of association and belonging.

For example in food industry special menu’s can be announced and promoted. Stores can offer special discounts; services sector can announce special packages, so on.

Many businesses take advantage of this opportunity and add themes to their logo, website and banners or brochures. This creates a level of comfort and recognition among the clientele and results into strong association with the business and better customer loyalty.

At logoInn, we are celebrating the occasion by announcing special discounted offer. Order your logo design now to get a special Good Firday 15% discount (Limited Time Offer).

New Logo for Yellow Pages Group’s New Brand Image

World renowned Yellow Pages Group has announced a new logo design. Canada based YPG’s logo was one of the finest examples of logo design. It was simple, explained the whole idea of yellow pages, and established a brand identity for the product and the group. Yellow pages’ logo commonly known as Walking Fingers logo had two fingers crawling pages of a book. The book represented Yellow Pages directory and walking fingers suggested searching or browsing listings in the directory.

The New logo consists on the Walking finger crawling into yellow space. The space here represents the various formats of new media and new ways to browse and search the listings in Yellow Pages.

Stéphane Marceau, Chief Marketing Officer at Yellow Pages Group said: “The new YPG logo positions us as resolutely modern, innovative, and digital. While significant changes have been made, we kept our most important assets building on over 100 years of vested brand equity; our famous yellow color is bolder and our trademarked Walking Fingers™ – one of the most recognized icons worldwide – continues to be at the heart of our identity.”

Marceau continued: “The ad campaign is young, it’s funny and it underlines how our mobile and web platforms are central to the future of YPG. We are Canada’s media leader in terms of online and mobile reach, number of online advertisers and Internet revenues.”

London 2012 Olympics Logo Still a Disaster

I clearly remember the time when the London 2012 Olympics logo was launched and there was so much fuss about it. According to most critics it was not a good logo design. Three years ago while reviewing this Olympics Logo, blogger and author David Airey called it a “Disaster”.

At that time the official response to all the criticism was that the logo was intentionally brave, bold and ahead of its time but that we would learn to love it.

As it is pointed out in New York Times’ Design section today, the logo still sucks.

I wonder, is this possible for the Olympics organizers to redesign the logo now when the Olympics are just two years away? I think, with the help of today’s media a new logo can be designed and reintroduced. So why not just go for it? That will be a really bold move.

History of I heart NY Logo

I heart NY is one of the most popular logo designs of all times. This historical logo has become a pop culture icon. This image represents the State of New York not the New York City. It was designed by Milton Glaser in 1977 for the New York State Tourism Department.

It was used by the State of New York’s tourism department and it was meant to run for the duration of a planned month long marketing campaign. However, the logo became so immensely popular that even though the tourism department’s marketing campaign ended as per schedule but the logo kept circulating around.

Slowly it became associated with the New York City and the t-shirts with this logo are still sold and wore all over the world. In the wake of September 11, 2001 attacks many New Yorkers and tourists wore these t-shirts to show their support. Milton Glaser redesigned the logo adding “More Than Ever” and a black spot on the heart symbolizing the world trade center.

The logo has appeared in countless movies, TV shows, news, magazines, memorabilia, and on almost every medium where a logo can be shown or displayed. Celebrities wore t-shirts with this logo and have appeared in live shows or photo shoots. This logo is not only popular in the United States, in fact it is also immensely popular and well-recognized around the world. People from all major cities of the world imitated the logo by replacing NY with their own city’s initials.

Even though Milton Glaser designed the logo for free, The New York state department is the legal owner of the logo. At times State Officials file legal petitions against the usage of their copyrighted logo. But even then the design is copied and imitated throughout the world.

Tripple999 – An Unoriginal Design Company’s Shameless Theft Exposed

We at Logoinn believe in creativity and our company invests huge amounts of money in hiring brilliant creative designers. We pride ourselves as the trustworthy brand builders. We care about our clients and their reputation as much as we care about ours. We love our clients (we send them cards on Valentine’s Day).

We believe that what we do is probably the most crucial step in any businesses brand identity development and marketing strategy. We design logos that represent not just businesses but people behind those businesses, their values, their missions, their goals, and their dreams. We help them obtain a unique visual representation of all these things in one tiny little image. We work very hard to satisfy the needs of our clients and sometimes our clients don’t even know what they need so instead of taking advantage of innocent clients we help them figure this out, as we have a policy of genuine care and sincere advice (we don’t charge extra for that, we also give away courteous smiles and good thoughts).

Unfortunately, our industry is full of people and companies who do not invest in creativity and talent. They rip off the designs and ideas from other logo design service providers and present them to their clients as their own ideas.

Triple999 is one such company offering unique custom logo design to its clients with website design and brochure design services. Now let’s see how bad Tripple999 actually is:

Tripple999 's website layout Logoinn's original web design
Tripple999’s stolen web design Logoinn’s Original Web Design

Tripple999 shamelessly copied the entire visual design including our header and color scheme. Click on the images to enlarge them and examine.

We are not angry at Tripple999 we feel pity for them and poor clients who would hire them to do their logo designs. They wouldn’t know that the logo design they are displaying so proudly is actually a rip-off from some other popular brand with little or no modifications at all.
We would like to warn each and every business out there to be very careful when hiring someone for important projects such as logo design. Please remember that a logo is the most important part of a brand identity and if someone sells you a stolen idea and the victim of this theft decides to pursue justice from a legal court then you could get into big trouble.

But since we love you so much we want to save you from trouble. So next time, when you are thinking about getting a logo design, Hire us… we are thinking about sending chocolate bunnies this Easter.

Music Television out of New MTV Logo

In a recent rebranding campaign MTV has removed the tagline ‘Music Television’ from its logo. A move that was necessary, because MTV is not a music channel since a long time now. In fact it has become more of a reality television these days.

The redesign of MTV’s logo is significant in many ways. First of all, it is a little saddening for the generation that grew up watching Michael Jackson and Madonna videos on the channel. This move represents the end of an era and beginning of something new. The MTV logo affected the pop culture throughout the 80s and 90s. The logo has appeared in countless movies, television shows, even paintings. This logo was displayed when someone had to represent the youth of eighties and nineties. It was the icon of modernism, freedom, music and so much more joyful themes.

Old MTV Logo New MTV Logo

But since last few years music was disappearing really fast from the network and the programming didn’t really meet the logo design concept. It is a network that broadcasts shows such as ’16 and pregnant’.

Some even blamed MTV to be a liberal propaganda tool. Conservative and republican media outlets responded in an outburst when MTV started trashing Sarah Palin. Later on some republican bloggers even called MTV liberal fascist. The new logo design would help MTV rebrand itself as a reality TV representing the popular culture of our times. However, many believe that MTV is already considered anything but a music channel.
