The online auction website was founded as AuctionWeb in San Jose, California, on September 3, 1995, by French-born Iranian computer programmer Pierre Omidyar. Omidyar’s original site was called AuctionWeb. A section of that site was called Echo Bay Technology Group, and when Omidyar went to register that name, echobay.com was taken. Then further he decided to make it “ebay”.

EBay is the world’s online marketplace; a place for buyers and sellers to come together and trade almost anything.
