London 2012 Olympics Logo Still a Disaster

I clearly remember the time when the London 2012 Olympics logo was launched and there was so much fuss about it. According to most critics it was not a good logo design. Three years ago while reviewing this Olympics Logo, blogger and author David Airey called it a “Disaster”.

At that time the official response to all the criticism was that the logo was intentionally brave, bold and ahead of its time but that we would learn to love it.

As it is pointed out in New York Times’ Design section today, the logo still sucks.

I wonder, is this possible for the Olympics organizers to redesign the logo now when the Olympics are just two years away? I think, with the help of today’s media a new logo can be designed and reintroduced. So why not just go for it? That will be a really bold move.

Really bold moves are for those that are themselves bold, brave, iconoclastic and generally ahead of their time.
Unfortunately they are not for those with a deep psychological desire to be valiant losers and underdogs.
So it looks like we’ll be stuck with a retrograde logo.
“Learn to love it”? Probably not. Even after the games are long finished, we will no-doubt be haunted by the logo on “logo fail” type lists.

Excellent article, thanks.
