Olympics 2012 – Highlights

The summer Olympic Games, officially called as ‘London 2012 Olympic Games’ have been scheduled from 27 July, 2012 to 22 August 2012 in London, England, United Kingdom. This article is to share some important happenings of the event.

London is going to host this grand event for the third time and it is the first ever country to get this privilege. Earlier, it was in 1908 and 1948 that London hosted the Olympic Games.

Featured Sports

The 2012 Olympic Games features 26 sports and 39 disciplines, while the 2012 Paralympic Games includes 20 sports and 21 disciplines.

Venues

The selected venues include Olympic Park Venues, Venues within London and outside Olympic Park, Venues outside Olympic Park.

Participating Nations

Till date, there are 147 nations who have qualified for the Summer Olympics 2012 with at least one athlete.

2012 Summer Olympics Torch Relay

From 19th May 2012 to 27th July 2012, the Olympic Torch relay will be run. Starting from Land’s End in Cornwall, it will take 70 days, 6 island visits with about 8,000 people carrying torch for 300m each.

The nomination process for torch bearers was run from May – June 2011 and it is sponsored by Coca – Cola, Lloyd TSB and Samsung.

Mascots

The official mascots for the 2012 Summer Olympic and Paralympic games are Wenlock and Mandeville. Both are the two animations depicting two drops of steel from a steelworks in Bolton. Wenlock is named after Much Wenlock, a town in Shropshire and Mandeville is name after Stoke Mandeville, a village in Buckinghamshire.

Two stories have been written about mascots. One entitled as ‘Out of the Rainbow’ describes how Wenlock and Mandeville came to be and the other ‘Adventures On A Rainbow’ is about children from Out Of A Rainbow meeting the two mascots and performing various Olympic and Paralympic games.
